Civilized Pet Tip: Ramps can be very useful for helping healthy dogs into vehicles as well as senior or injured dogs into the house or onto furniture if they don’t like pet stairs. Most ramps don’t have guard rails for some reason, and dogs can be reluctant to trust the climb on unfamiliar surfaces. You have to begin training them to use the ramp when it is laying flat on the ground in a safe area. The first step is to lead them onto the flat ramp with a treat and teach them to just walk across it on the ground. Don’t rush, take your time. Use a toy, roll a ball across it for them chase, back and forth on the ramp, whatever helps them to just walk on the ramp. The 2nd step is to raise it up just a little, like onto a foot stool or a low coffee table and repeat with high value treats until they gain confidence walking on the ramp. Walk up and down using treats. You can introduce a new command as you point along the ramp say ‘Ramp’ or any soundbyte you like, and praise their performance with ‘Good Ramp’. When your dog is completely comfortable using the ramp at a low grade incline, the final step is to place it against your vehicle and use treats until the dog is just happy to get in and go for a ride!
