Update: A few animals worldwide have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, mostly after exposure to sick people. The CDC advises pets are unlikely to be infectious to people and humans rarely spread the illness to pets. However, if you are sick or have been in contact with someone who is please restrict contact with pets:
- DO protect your pets: Wear a face mask at home!
- DO avoid face-to-face contact with your pet
- DON’T share food or table scraps
- DON’T sleep in the same bed with your pets
An animal suspected of being infected with COVID-19 should be evaluated for the many causes of respiratory or gastrointestinal illness that are more common than the novel coronavirus, and your vet will decide if testing for the virus is mandated.
