HILL’S SCIENCE DIET

Hill’s Science Diet was founded by a veterinarian in Topeka, KS in 1948 to formulate dog food for dogs with kidney disease. By 1951, 4 prescription dog foods had been developed, and today includes more than 50 pet foods formulated for many life stages in healthy and special needs pets. They have veterinary specialists in nutrition and internal medicine on staff and continue to lead the pack in developing nutrition standards for healthy dogs and prescription diets for dogs who need help. IAMS

Paul Iams started making dog food in 1946. By the 1960s the Iams Company is driven by research into the quality and nutrition of dog food. By the 1980s, IAMS™ had pet foods based on life stages and cat food, too. They are easy to find with their “rainbow of colors” packaging design and iconic paw print logo. IAMS is a company known for quality control and excellence in pet nutrition.

ROYAL CANIN

Royal Canin was founded in 1968 by a veterinarian in France. The company was acquired twice more by larger corporations that funded research and expansion. In 1994, they began to make cat food. In 2002, they launched their line of dog foods tailored to the specific needs of dog breeds. By 2003, their line of veterinary prescription diets was competing with Hill’s Science Diet. Royal Canin is based in France, but they manufacture pet foods on every continent except Antartica. Recently, they launched a line of breed specific foods marketed to dog owners of the most popular breeds. We see this as a marketing strategy; without studies proving they are truly distinct from the foods shown below, we choose not to include breed specific foods at this time.
