Civilized Pet Tip: The Martingale collar has been called a humane choke choke collar and is at the top of our Civilized Choice list. The Martingale (also called the Greyhound collar) prevents your dog from backing out because it tightens around the neck when tension is applied to the leash. The collar loosens again when your dog relaxes and the leash slackens. Because Martingale collar is more of a squeeze than a choke, because the design only allows it to tighten so much. Traditional martingales have no buckle and just slip over the head when you get home, or just remove the leash and it can be left on indoors. It gives you the authority you need, along with the security your dog needs.

Head Collars

Civilized Pet Tip: Introduce all head collars gradually, your dog will feel weird at first and needs to get used to the snout loop and the new type of control you have. Take it slow, let your dog get used to wearing it inside without a leash at first. It might even take a week or two to go for a walk, but it will definitely be worth it. Choke Collars

Civilized Pet Tip: The collars that follow below are more severe training collars intended for young adult or adult dogs who are resistant to reward based training alone. Choke collars, regardless of the kind, must be used with respect. A choke collar should fit slightly loosely until tnesion is applied with the leash. If it is tight when the leash is slack, it is too tight and should be loosened. Choke collars should only be worn when a leash is put on, and never left on the dog when unsupervised. Never lift your dog’s feet off the ground to ‘choke’ him into obedience. This is abusive and cruel. If any dog trainer does this to your dog or recommends that you do, protect your dog. Find another dog trainer immediately or see a veterinary behaviorist for expert guidance. Choke collars, used mindfully and appropriately, can be a valuable tool along with a leash shorter than 4ft in length. With an experienced professional to guide you, you might even discover that a choke collar is not what’s best to civilize your dog after all.

Electric Shock Collar. Looking for a shock collar for your dog? Sorry, you won’t find any here because we don’t recommend them. Many studies have shown the serious harm they can do to your pet both emotionally and physically, and the damage they do to your relationship. If a dog trainer recommends a shock collar for your dog, take your dog safely away and find a reward based trainer. If you are using a shock collar, please stop. Never send your pet away for training at a ‘boot camp’; you don’t know what they will do to your best friend when you’re not around. Your dog should respond to you because of practice and trust built over time, and not to a stranger with a remote control. A shock collar would be considered abusive for people, and it’s abusive for dogs, too.

Mighty Paw Stainless Steel Martingale Training Collar is made with premium quality Stainless Steel so it won’t rust or tarnish. It’s also chew-proof (dogs don’t like chewing metal ). This collar is 1/2 way between a metal choke chain (see below) and a true martingale collar, and shouldn’t be left on indoors. It is a bit more severe than a standard martingale collar because it is narrower and the force is not distributed as it would in a wider collar. A nice option for rainy days.

This standard model has a fixed length on the side straps. The best one is the one that fits your dog best (you won’t know until she tries it on). It gives you control over the dog’s head and therefore interrupts locking on to the target. Features a wide, padded noseband that is also reflective for visibility in low light. A strong clip on the front of the Halti attaches to your dog’s basic collar for extra security. Noseband and cheek straps adjust to fit a wide range of snout shapes for gentle effective control when you need it most. Available in S, M, L; measure your dog before ordering! Highly recommended and a top Civilized Choice.	PetSafe Gentle Leader Headcollar is easy to fit and has a neoprene padded nose loop. However, the straps are thin and can sometimes snap with larger powerful dogs so the other headcollars may be a better choice for you (and the wider ones are more comfortable, too). Depending on your dog’s shape, the snout band can ride up into the eyes so try one and see how it fits your dog! To be introduced gradually inside without a leash and then with daily practice indoors on leash, then out you go! Comes in XS -> XL and in 8 colors. Holt Head Collar. This version of the head collar offers some minor design variations, no real padding but the straps are wide and it might fit your dog better than our top picks. Be sure to measure your dog as directed for the right size.

The pinch segments go 2/3 of the way around, making it less severe. Tips can come off, so be sure to replace them if they do.	Herm Sprenger Dog Prong Training Collar has ‘Comfort Tips’. Some dogs respond well to this training tool, however, others will tolerate the pain and ignore you. Reward based training usually works best, but prong chokes have their place. This collar features removable links to adjust size. Recommended only for adult dogs with thickly muscled necks. Available in S, M, Heavy and X-Heavy sizes.


Herm Sprenger Collar Neck Tech, Stainless Steel 24” fits dogs with neck circumference up to 21″. Each unique segment has blunted linear prongs that may be as effective as the standard prong choke but less severe. They suggest it imitates canine teeth, but that can be suggested for any prong collar. They disclose the possibility of unintended opening (also possible for other prong chokes). Also comes in black stainless steel.	Herm Sprenger Fur Saver Heavy Dog Training Collar This dog training collar is great for long-haired dogs. Elongated links pull out less hair than other choke chains can over time. Herm Sprenger is known for their quality control, craftsmanship and high quality collars. The Fur Saver collars are available in 3mm x 19″, 21″ and 23″ and 4mm x 23″, 25″ and 27″.
