Rope Leashes
Civilized Pet Tip: Rope leashes can be very comfortable to use. Some are made with a neoprene or ‘padded’ handle to make them easier to grip. But your hold on the leash is stronger if you slip the wrist band around your wrist and grasp it in your fist. Your fingers are not as strong. If you decide to get a rope leash, remove the padding on the handle so you can use the wrist band the way it’s more secure. Some rope leashes are British style slip leads with a choke collar, combining collar and leash in one easy step. These are not for use with small or toy dogs. Use all choke collars with respect, and only on dogs with strongly developed neck muscles.

Leather Leashes
Civilized Pet Tip: The choice of leash material is largely based on personal preference. Leather leashes are typically more pricey and deserve occasional care with leather creams to keep them from drying out and protect from stains. Some dogs, especially puppies, love to chew leather so you will want to put this leash away when not in use (and see the Treats section for better stuff to chew). Leather leashes can get slippery, but some folks like the feel of worn in leather. The length and your handling technique are more important, and shorter leashes (4ft is ideal for most dogs and their people) give you and your dog a tighter connection.

Long Leashes
Civilized Pet Tip: Long training leashes are not recommended for daily walks, but they do allow your dog the freedom to explore and still be attached to you. Remember that for every foot of leash your dog’s momentum TRIPLES, so shorter leashes are still the way to go for safety when you’re hiking or camping or exploring somewhere out there. However, long training leashes are helpful to train your dog to Come, or to practice commands without being completely off leash. So we’ve listed a few of them for you below.

Retractable Leashes
Looking for a retractable leash? You won’t find them here because we don’t recommend them. The plastic casing can split or crack. The thin long lead can fray and snap without warning. It can tangle and jam inside the case. Your dog can run right out into the middle of the road and get hit. When your dog is 10, 15, 20ft away you have no control and no ability to prevent disaster. Little dogs have been plucked away by coyotes, hit by skateboards on the sidewalk, or just pounced on by a neighbor’s dog running out their front door. You have no time to protect your friend when she’s that far away from you. Finally, holding anything with 4 fingers is not a strong grip. The plastic casing is easily pulled out of your hand. A strong grip comes when your fingers and thumb grasp a leash handle. Please protect your best friend and get a simple 4ft leash. Keep the ones you love close to you. Thank you.
